Prestonkirk, which was known of old as Prestonhaugh, was a prebend of the collegiate church of Dunbar and was dedicated to St Baldred. The site, on which the present day church was built in 1770, has been a place of worship since as early as the 12th century. The church has undergone considerable refurbishment and alterations since 1770 however there still remains as part of the building, a section of the medieval chancel dating back to the 13th century. Preston kirk was united in 1959 with the United Free Church Session of Prestonkirk St Andrew's, the united charge remained under the name of Prestonkirk. Later in 1974 Whittinghame, which was linked with Stenton, formed a link with Prestonkirk. The three session were united in 1999 to form the parish of Traprain. The kirk session of Prestonkirk sat with the Presbytery of Dunbar, later of Haddington and Dunbar and formerly the Synod of Lothian and Tweedale. |
