The church at Pettinain belonged to the Abbey of Dryburgh and ministry is recorded here from 1569 in the person of Robert Fisher. The present church is said to have been built in the late 17th century and it has a belfry bearing the date 1696. Pettinain was linked in 1952 with the parish of Carmichael and was further linked 20 years later in 1972 with the sessions of Covington and Thankerton St Michaels. This linkage remain until the 30th March 1995 when the four named parishes were united together to form the parish of Cairngryffe. Cairngryffe was linked with Symington on the same date. Pettinain kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Lanark and formerly the Synod of Glasgow, later of Clydesdale. |
