The Presbytery of Penpont, formerly know as Sanquhar, was formed by annexations from the Presbytery of Dumfries sometime prior to 1638. The register of the Presbytery commences on the 31st December 1690 and it ceased to exist in 1929, when the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church came together and the parishes were transferred to the Presbytery of Dumfries, with the exception on Wanlockhead which was transferred to the Presbytery of Lanark. Penpont sat within the Synod of Dumfries. |
