The ruins of the Post-Reformation St Mungo's Parish church, built in the 17th century, can still be seen in the churchyard of the present day kirk, which was erected in 1771. Due to the development of the paper making industry in Penicuik, and the resultant population increase a subsequent enlargement of the church was carried out in 1837. Prior to the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland in 1929, the church was normally just designated Penicuik, but thereafter it became Penicuik St Mungo's. It sat within the Presbytery of Dalkeith and later the Presbytery of Lothian. |
