Prior to the reformation the church of Pencaitland belonged to the Abbey of Dryburgh. There exists an aisle within the church that dates back to the early 13th century, but it was in the most built in 1631, and subsequently restored in 1882. The Session united with Pencaitland West in 1935 but continued under the same name, the old church also continued to be used for worship. Pencaitland was linked with Ormiston in 1981. The parish was disjoined from the Presbytery of Dalkeith at some stage between 1583 and 1587 and added to the Presbytery of Haddington, later Haddington and Dunbar, and presently sits within the Presbytery of Lothian. |
