It was proposed by the General Assembly in 1581 that the Presbytery of Peebles should be erected and the register commences on 11 October 1596. As from 1 January 1976 the Presbytery united with the Presbytery of Melrose to form the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. The court formerly sat within the Synod of Lothian and Tweedale.
