Prior to the reformation, the church of Newton was dedicated to St Mary and belonged to the Abbey of Dunfermline. In 1584 the ancient parishes of Woomet and Newton were united under the name of Newton. The present church building was erected in 1742 at a sight more suitable to serve the two united parishes. Ministry here is recorded from 1586 in the person of John Barbour, prior to this time the parish has been served only by a reader. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dalkeith, later the Presbytery of Lothian and formerly the Synod of Lothian and Tweedale. |
