On the 9th May 1609 this parish, along with a chapel of St Columba that existed in ancient times at Monykebuck, was disjoined from St Machar's, Aberdeen. The newly erected parish was initially named Monykebuck but by the end of the 17th century had come to be known as Upper Machar. The name of New Machar was later introduced in the 18th century, probably in contradiction to the adjoining parish of Old Machar, of which it once formed a part. The present day church was built in 1791.In the 19th century, after the disruption, a United Free Church of New Machar was established. It became known as New Machar West and the parish church as New Machar East. The two charges were united in 1932 under the name of New Machar. New Machar Kirk Session sat in the Presbytery of Aberdeen and later of Gordon. |
