Newhills, know of old as Kepplehills or Capelhills, originally existed as part of the parish of St Machar or Old Machar, whose church is situated in old Aberdeen. Due to the remote situation of the parish church, in relation to the residents of Kepplehills, there was a chapel built in 1663 by a George Davidson of Pettens. He also granted an endowment for the charge, which covered an area of 500 acres of the lands of Capelhills or Keppelhills. In 1666 the court of Teinds disjoined the parish from St Machar's, Aberdeen and erected it into the parish of Newhills. A new church was built in 1830 to replace the old building, the ruins of which still stand within the old burial ground. The kirk session of Newhills sits with the Presbytery of Aberdeen formerly the Synod of Aberdeen. |
