Prior to the reformation the Church of Newbattle was dedicated to St Mary and belonged to the Abbey of Newbattle. Evidence of the existence of a church at Newbattle dates back as far as 1233, when it is documented that an Abbey Church at Newbattle was dedicated by the Bishop of Moray. The ancient Newbattle Abbey Church had, prior to the reformation, suffered extensive damage at the hands of an invading English Army and had never been restored. As a result, post 1560, the remains of the Old Abbey church were removed and a new church erected. The new church, which sat very close to the present site, became the first independent Newbattle Church and the first permanent minister, Adam Foulis, was appointed in 1570 By 1720 the church was in such a poor state of repair that a new church had to be erected on a new site. The new, and still present day, church was completed in 1729. In 1952, the session of Newbattle and Easthouses were united, both churches continued in use for worship after the union. The Kirk Session of Newbattle sat with in the Presbytery of Dalkeith and later of Lothian. |
