The Presbytery of Mull, which sat within the Synod of Argyll, was erected by the General Assembly on the 12th May 1726 and the register begins in 1729. There were originally seven parishes within the Presbytery, the two island parishes of Iona and Ulva and the five parochial charges of Kilninian, Kilmore, Torosay, Kilfinichen and Kilvicheoan. Prior to 1729 all of these parishes fell within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lorn but in 1626 Thomas Knox, Bishop of the Isles, put forward that Mull, and the lesser islands surrounding it, should be administered as if the area were one parish, under the charge of only three ministers. After the erection of the Presbytery the seat of the court was established at Aros, with meetings held at Salen during the winter months and Tobermory in the Summer. The Presbytery was later united, by Act of Assembly, in 1963 with the Presbytery of Lorn under the title Presbytery of Lorn and Mull.
