Monifieth was a pre-Reformation church. It was dedicated to St Rule who is reputed to have come to Dundee with the relics of St Andrew. The church belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath. The first Presbyterian minister was appointed to Monifieth Parish church in 1565. The congregation of Barnhill, St Margaret's, formed in 1884, was originally under the jurisdiction of Monifieth Kirk Session. The present Monifieth parish church was built in 1813 on the site of the previous church building. Alterations were carried out in 1873 and in 1913. Monifieth Parish Church became Monifieth St Rule's in 1929. Monifieth St Rule's church is in the Presbytery of Dundee, which was in the synod of Angus and Mearns until the abolition of synods in 1992. |
