The medieval church was dedicated to St Andrew and was appropriated to the Priory of Iona and later the Abbey of Holyrood. Ministry began in 1563 in the person of Robert Chapman, reader. Until the formation of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright Presbytery some time after 1975, Balmaghie kirk session was within the jurisdiction of Kirkcudbright Presbytery. The modern parish church was rebuilt in 1794. On 26 September 1949 the session united with Laurieston under the name Balmaghie. On 22 October 1978 the session formed a link with Balmaclellan which was terminated on 9 March 1988, at which time a further link was established with Tarff and Twynholm. |
