The kirk Session of Mid Calder St John's is located in the village of Midcalder and a church is thought to have existed on the present site since 1150. The session was formerly called Calder-Comitis and it was in 1646 that Mid Calder was initially formed, when the parish was divided into two, Mid-Calder and West Calder. The church was dedicated to St Cuthbert and originally belonged to the Abbey of Dunfermline. In 1884 the session was disjoined from the Presbytery of Linlithgow and annexed to the Presbytery of Edinburgh by the General Assembly. It presently falls within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of West Lothian. At the beginning of the 20th century a United Free Church of Mid calder was erected which became known as Mid Calder Bridgend. The two sessions of Mid Calder St John's and Mid Calder Bridgend were united in 1956 under the name of Mid Calder, Kirk of Calder and the ministry of the Rev D.W. Rosie, minister at Mid Calder St John's. |
