The parish of Mearns, containing Newton Mearns village and part of Busby town lies in south-east of Renfrewshire. The church of Mearns belonged to the Abbey of Paisley. Ministry here is recorded from 1584 in the person of Patrick Adamson, however there exists reference to the parish in the Chartulary of Glasgow as far back as 1296. In it?s early days the spelling of the old Parish varied, as ancient names often did, and it was also referred to as Mernes, Mearnis, Mernes and even Morness. The present day church dates back to 1813 and there have since been additions and renovations carried out in 1932, and 2000. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Paisley and later the Presbytery of Glasgow. |
