The Kirk Session of Maxton was established following the Reformation in 1560. Ministers to the parish are recorded from 1560. Prior to the Reformation, the church belonged to the Abbey of Dryburgh. Maxton formed part of the Presbytery of Selkirk until 1929, when it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose. With the restructuring of presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. Maxton was linked to Mertoun from 1954 until 1981, when it became linked with Newtown. However, in 1994, this latter link was terminated and Maxton and Mertoun were united. At that time, the United Session of Maxton and Mertoun were also linked with St. Boswells. |
