The patron saint of the medieval church was St Dionysius (Denys). Ministry began in 1574 with John Kent (or Flint) as reader. Initially the session was within the jurisdiction of Chirnside Presbytery until 1690 when the presbytery united with Duns. Lamberton united with Ayton in 1627, being annexed to Mordington in 1650. The nineteenth century church was built in 1865, with Alexander Mitchell-Innes of Ayton paying for its construction. The session of Old Ayton united with the United Free Church congregation of Ayton West on 1 November 1934. On 1 January 1969, Ayton linked with Burnmouth, followed by a further link on 11 September 1984 with Grantshouse and Houndswood with Reston. |
