The parish of Maryton lies in the north-east of Angus, to the south of Montrose. Originally a chapel of the cathedral at Brechin and named St Mary's of Old Montrose, the kirk of Maryton was established as a separate parish in 1649 and a new church was built in 1791. Maryton was later linked with Craig in 1959 and the linkage remained until 1966 when it was terminated in favour of a union of the two sessions under the name of Craig and Maryton. Craig and Maryton was only to last until 1971 when the parish of Inchbrayock was formed by the union of the united parish with Ferryden, under the ministry of Rev J M Paterson, minister at Ferryden. Inchbrayock was subsequently linked with Montrose Melville South in 1981.The kirk session of Maryton originally sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Brechin and later Brechin and Fordoun, until by Act of Assembly in 1961, the Presbytery of Arbroath was united with the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun to form the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. |
