The church of Lunan, or Inverlunan as it was known of old, was dedicated to St Lunan and belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath.Ministry of the parish is recorded from 1585 in the person of Andrew Leith. Walter Miln, a priest at Lunan for over forty years, was burned as a heretic in 1558 and was the last person to suffer Martyrdom in Scotland for the cause of the reformation. A monument to his memory stands within the church. Lunan was united with Inverkeilor in 1953 to form the session of Inverkeilor and Lunan, both churches remained in use after the union. The united session was further linked with Friockeim and Kinnell in 1983. The kirk session of Lunan originally sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Arbroath however, by Act of Assembly XXXII 1961, the Presbytery of Arbroath was united with the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun to form the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. |
