The Parish of Cumbernauld was disjoined from Kirkintilloch in 1649 by the Commissioners for the Plantation of Kirks, and then called Easter Lenzie. The church was built in 1659 and the parish became known from this date onwards as Cumbernauld. Kirk session records however are recorded under the name of Easter Lenzie right up until 1721. Ministry is first recorded in the name of Mr Thomas Stuart in 1656. The church was repaired in 1810 and remains is use to the present day. When the building of the New Town of Cumbernauld commenced in 1958, new Church Extension charges were erected causing Cumbernauld Kirk Session to be renamed Cumbernauld Old. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Glasgow and was transferred to the Presbytery of Linlithgow and Falkirk in 1929. |
