The kirk session of Kirkpatrick- Durham (formerly known as Kirkpatrick-in-the-muir) was dedicated to St Patrick and belonged to the Abbey of Sweetheart. The name Durham comes from the original name of the hamlet at which St Patrick's church was built. Ministry is not recorded at Kirkpatrick until 1610 but there exists record of readers from 1567. At the Disruption in 1843, the minister and most of his congregation joined the Free Church. After the union in 1929 of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, the former Free then United Free church, called Kirkpatrick Durham Craig, and the established church charge, Kirkpatrick Durham West, were united in 1937. Kirkpatrick Durham linked with Corsock in 1963, and the parishes were united in 1989 to form Corsock and Kirkpatrick Durham. Kirkpatrick Durham was in the Presbytery of Dumfries until it was transferred to the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright in 1948. |
