The church of Kirkmichael was dedicated to St Michael and belonged to the Abbey of Kilwinning. Garrvel, which was formerly known as Garvald was united with the parish in 1674, despite the protestation of the parishioners of Garvald who had been without a minister for several years. The united parish later linked with Tinwald in 1970 under the ministry of the Rev F.I MacDonald, minister at Tinwald. Kirkmichael and Garvel sat within the Presbytery of Lochmaben prior to 1929, between 1929 and 1944 in the Presbytery of Annandale and was transferred to the Presbytery of Dumfries in 1944. The present church was built in 1813. |
