The church of Kirkden was dedicated by Bishop be Bernham in 1243 to St Malrubh, and belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath. Ministry is recorded at Kirkden in the person of John Johnstone from 1567. Kirkden was united with Dunnichen and Letham, which both sat within the Presbytery of Forfar, in 1931. The churches of Dunnichen and Letham continued in use but the church of Kirkden was later sold and demolished. Kirkden was originally within the Presbytery of Forfar but was annexed in 1616 and transferred to the Presbytery of Arbroath where it remained until by Act of Assembly 1961 the Presbytery of Arbroath, Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of Angus and Mearns. |
