The church of Kingarth belonged to the Abbey of Paisley and it is believed that the first church erected here was built by St Catan towards the end of the 6th century. A new parish church was built in 1680 on an alternative and more central site and this was in turn replaced in 1826. Ministry is recorded at Kingarth from 1572 in the person of Archibald Sinclair. In 1931 Kingarth united with Kilchatten Bay and the united parish further linked with Rothesay The High Kirk in 1973. Kingarth sat within the Presbytery of Irvine but was transferred to the Presbytery of Dunoon in 1639. |
