Prior to the reformation there were four churches or chapels within the area served by the current parish of Kilbrandon and Kilchattan, the churches were: Kilbrandon, Kilchattan , Kilbride and Kilchoan. The four parishes were united in the 17th century and the latter two names were dropped. The two remaining named parishes retained their own church after they united, up until the congregations were joined together in 1932. The north church ceased to be used for worship and became the Church hall. The Parish lies within Argyll and within the Presbytery of Lorn, which has been known as Lorn and Mull since the two Presbyteries were united by Act of Assembly in 1963. Kilbranden is made up of Seil, Easdale, several smaller islands and a share of the adjacent mainland. Its church, which sits upon Seil, was dedicated to St Brendan the Voyager. Kilchatten consists of Luing, Shuna, Torsay and some smaller Islands. Its church which was dedicated to St Catan and is on Luing. Kilbrandon and Kilchattan was linked in 1997 with Colonsay and Oronsay. |
