The church of Kelton was dedicated to St Oswald the martyr, it belonged originally to the priory of Iona but passed in the 12th century into the possession of the Abbey of Holyrood where it remained up to the reformation. Ministry is recorded at Kelton from 1567 in the name of James Pane. The parish of Kelton consisted of three united parishes, Kelton, Gelston and Kirkcormick, the latter two having been annexed into the Kelton church in 1698. Kelton church, which sits with in the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright and formerly the Synod of Galloway, was rebuilt in 1743 and again in 1806. The ruins of the church, as built in 1743 still stand within the old churchyard. |
