The medieval church of "Mackessog of Auchterarane (Auchterarder)" was granted to Inchaffray Abbey by Gilbert, Earl of Strathearn. Ministry began in 1564 in the person of David Murray, reader. Until the late twentieth century, when the session fell within the jurisdiction of Perth Presbytery, the session was within the jurisdiction of Auchterarder Presbytery. The presentation of Mr Young by the patron, Lord kinnoull, in 1834 led to a series of court cases being held questioning the extent to which the lay patron had the right to intrude a minister agianst the expressed desire of the male heads of families. These court cases became, and still are, known as the "Auchterarder Cases" and represent the issues at the heart of the "Ten Years Conflict" which led to "The Disruption" of 1843. Auchterarder and Aberuthven parishes linked about the beginning of the seventeenth century. On 6 July 1983 Auchterarder Parish was formed by the union of Auchterarder barony and Auchterarder St. Andew's and West. |
