In 1178 the church of Inverkeilor was granted to Arbroath Abbey by Walter de Berkley, chamberlain of the King. The Kirk Session was dedicated to St Conan and ministry is recorded at Inverkeilor from 1567 in the person of Charles Rossie. During the 16th century, the church of Ethie, which now lies in ruin, was united with Inverkeilor. Lunan was later united with Inverkeilor in 1953 to form the session of Inverkeilor and Lunan, both churches remained in use after the union. The united session was further linked with Friockeim and Kinnell in 1983. The kirk session of Inverkeilor originally sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Arbroath however, by Act of Assembly XXXII 1961, the Presbytery of Arbroath was united with the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun to form the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. |
