The original church was built in 1176 by Ada, wife of Prince Henry of Scotland and mother of William the Lion and dedicated in 1244 by Bishop de Bernham and was appropriated to the Priory of Haddington. This continued to be the parish church until 1780 when a new church was erected. There were further alterations in 1867 when the transepts and chanecel were added. Protestant ministry began within the session in 1576 with Robert Boncle, reader. Until the 1930s the session of Athelstaneford was under the jurisdiction of Haddington Presbytery, after this time it was under the jurisdiction of Haddington and Dunbar Presbytery and is currently within Lothian presbytery. A Parish history by Rev. L. O. Duncan is available locally. On 9 June 1974 Athlestaneford became linked with Whitkirk and St Mary's, Tyninghame. |
