St John?s Church, Glasgow, originated with mission work by the established church in Calton in 1817. A building in Gallowgate was opened in the same year and the parish disjoined as a separate burgh church. The first minister, inducted in 1821, was the theologian Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847, see Dictionary of National Biography), who introduced a controversial scheme for poor relief in the parish. The first church had a successor in Graeme Street, built to designs by David Hamilton and dedicated in 1819. The parish was terminated in 1954 on uniting with Chalmers as St John?s Chalmers. It was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). |
