Barony (I) Church, Glasgow, was disjoined in 1595 from the medieval parish of Glasgow, which had included not merely the area of the city, but also the adjoining Barony (later Regality) of the archbishops. At first the congregation worshipped in the crypt of the Cathedral. In 1798 a new church was built in Cathedral Square, but this was later demolished. In 1895 the congregation raised funds for a new church building on the opposite side of Cathedral Square, the site of the former Townhead Gas Works. The parish, which was terminated in 1944 on uniting with Macleod as Barony (II), was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). A further union took place in 1982 with the congregation of St Paul's (Outer High) and St David's (Ramshorn) to form Barony Ramshorn Church of Scotland. |
