Bonhill of Old Buchnull originally belonged to the Colliegiate Church of St Mary at Dunbarton. The parochial area was enlarged by the Commissioners for the Plantation of Kirks in 1650, and in 1836 Bonhill Church was rebuilt. In 1929 when the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church, the congregation at Bonhill became known as Bonhill Old Church of Scotland, to differentiate it from the two former United Free charges of Bonhill North and Bonhill South. A link was established with Alexandria Bridge Street in 1958, but this linking was terminated in 1974 in favour of a union with Bonhill South, the united charge taking the name Bonhill Church of Scotland. |
