A proposal was made in 1642 there should be a church built at Gladsmuir. Despite a Decreet for it having been granted in 1650 by the Commission for Plantation of Kirks, the building of the kirk was not completed until 1660. The church was used for divine service from this time, however, it was not until 1692, when the united Presbytery recommended, that the parish was formally erected. The parish of Gladsmuir was formed by annexations from the contiguous parishes of Haddington, Aberlady and Tranent. In 1695 despite the completion of the first church only 35 years earlier, a new church was built for worship by William Baillie of Lamington This building now stands ruined close to the site of the present church, which opened for worship on 20th October 1839. The original kirk building was also left to a state of decay. Gladsmuir existed within the Presbytery of Haddington until recent presbyterial reorganisation, it now sits within the Presbytery of Lothian. Longniddry was linked to Gladsmuir in 1984. |
