Garvald and Bara, a united parish which was joined together by the Commissioner of Teinds in 1702, sits within the Presbytery of Haddington and the Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. Prior to the Reformation the church of Garvald belonged to the Cistercian nunnery at Haddington and Bara to the Abbey of Holyrood. Following the union of the two parishes service continued to take place alternately at the two churches until Bara fell into disrepair in 1744, and was ultimately demolished. The Church at Garvald was enlarged in 1829 and restored in 1963. Garvald and Bara, was linked in February 1951 with the Parish of Morham. This arrangement was later terminated and a union was forged between the parishes in 1957 creating the Parish of Garvald and Morham. Garvald and Moreham linked with Haddington West on 13 November 1980. |
