Foveran Kirk Session dates back as far as 1261, when the Earl of Buchan gave over a small portion of land at Newburgh to six poor prebends for the purpose of celebrating mass. Ministry is recorded from 1567 under the charge of Alexander Traill. The church of Foveran, which belonged to the Abbey of Deer, had a new building erected in 1794 which has since undergone renovation. There existed for a time the South Church and the North church of Foveran, Foveran North Kirk Session being situated within Holyrood Chapel at Newburgh. The two sessions, North and South, united in 1931 after which time the South Church and manse were demolished. Foveran originated within the Presbytery of Ellon but now exists under the Presbytery of Aberdeen. |
