The church court at Forfar was originally erected on 16th April 1611. The formation of Forfar involved the transference of the parishes of; Forfar, Tannadice and Aberlemno from the Presbytery of Brechin; Rescobie, Idvie, Dunnichen, Kirkbuddo, and Meathis from Arbroath; Glamis, Kirriemuir, Kinnettles and Cortachy from Meigle and Inverarity from Dundee. The registry of the Presbytery of Forfar begins on 29th October 1662. Between the years of 1689 and 1717 it is recorded that Forfar was united with the Presbytery of Dundee, this union having disjoined on 17th April 1717. By act of Assembly XXXII 1961 the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns was formed by the union of the Presbytery of Arbroath, Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun. The Presbytery is within the Synod of Angus and Mearns. |
