The Presbytery of Fordyce, which lay within the Synod of Aberdeen, was originally know as the Presbytery of Banff. In 1581, and again in 1586, the General Assembly had proposed the erection of a local Church Court at Banff and there is reference to the existence of a Court here from 1583. The parishes originally served by the court at Banff were: Banff, Inverboyndie, Rathen, Faskin, Dundurcus, Cullen, Deskford, Fordyce, Ordiquihill, Gamrie, Kinedward, Turriff, Auchterless, Forglen, Alvah, Inverkeithny, and Aberchirder.Upon the establishment of the Presbytery of Turriff, registry of which begins in 1642, many of the parishes within Banff's jurisdiction were transferred, and at the time of this transference the seat of the Presbytery was removed from Banff to Cullen. By 1638 a further change of the Presbytery seat had taken place and from this time the court became known as the Presbytery of Fordyce. The Presbytery register commences in 1623. The Presbytery of Strathbogie and Fordyce was formed in 1961 by an Act of Assembly which united the Presbytery of Strathbogie and the Presbytery of Fordyce. |
