A church was opened in Gilmerton in 1837 and the parish was erected quoad sacra in July 1860. In May 2000, when the minister retired, rather than an appointment of another minister, it was decided that Gilmerton should become a New Charge Congregation. This change of status was officially sanctioned on 4th November 2002 and the church was re-named Gilmerton New Church. In 2010 the congregation united with that of the Tron Kirk Moredun under the name of Tron (Gilmerton and Moredun) Church of Scotland. The united charge worshipped in the Tron Kirk building and the Gilmerton Church building, which was retained by the united charge, was used as a Christian based centre for people with drug and aclohol related problems. This centre is known as The Hub. |
