Due to the increased population of Troqueer, the church there became inadequate, and so a Petition for a Chapel of Ease to be erected in Maxwelltown was raised in 1827. The church was built in 1829, but was destroyed by fire on the 28 September 1842, and a new church erected in 1843. The church at Maxwelltown was disjoined from Troqeer on 17 July 1871 becoming a parish in its own right. In 1929 at the union of the United Free Church and the Established Church, the name of the charge at Maxwelltown became Dumfries Maxwelltown Laurieknowe Church of Scotland. The congregation united with that of Troqueer on 5 August 1976 as Dumfries Laurieknowe Troqueer, but Troqueer was dropped from the name from 3 November 1991. |
