A minister, Rev George Smith, was ordained and inducted to Albany Church for the Deaf in 1966. A Petition for the Albany Church for the Deaf congregation to be admitted into the Church of Scotland was granted by the General Assembly in 1974 and admitted by the Presbytery on 12 June 1974. Albany Church for the Deaf became known as Albany Deaf Church of Edinburgh on 3 May 1988. Following the Government's official recognition of British Sign Language as a language in its own right in 2003, the General Assembly urged congregations to use sign language, support initiatives for deaf people, and provide resources when appropriate. The Church of Scotland Deaf Ministry currently (2017) supports three ministers who look after the deaf community in three areas in Scotland. The areas are: The west of Scotland; the east of Scotland; and the north of Scotland and the Western Isles. |
