The church of Fetteresso, dedicated to St Carran, belonged to the collegiate church of the Kirk Heugh at St Andrews. Ministry in the person of John Cristison is recorded from 1560. Prior to 1813 a number of attempts were made to secure the parish a more suitable building. The old church was situated a mile outside Stonehaven and it would appear that the location proved problematic for parishioners in terms of traveling distance. In 1641 a petition was remitted by Parliament to the Commission for the Plantation of Kirks, and again to Parliament in 1649, on both occasions without success. The old church building, the ruin of which still stands, remained in use until 1813 when the present church was finally erected. The kirk sits within in the Presbytery of Fourdon. |
