The old church of Lanark, the ruins of which still remain standing, was anciently dedicated to St Kentigern and was granted in 1150 to the Abbey of Dryburgh. There additionally stood within the parish of Lanark a chapel of St Nicholas and in 1668, when the church of St Kentigern was abandoned, the congregation met here instead. St Nicholas's was later legally declared the parish church of Lanark in 1708 and was rebuilt in 1774. A mission chapel was also founded within the parish at New Lanark. In 1968 Lanark Old united with the congregation of Lanark St Leonard's, under the name of Lanark St Nicholas. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Lanark. |
