The church of Girthon belonged, prior to the Reformation, to the Bishop of Galloway and the session records ministry from 1567, in the person of Robert Muir, reader. In 1818 the church building was removed to Gatehouse-of-Fleet. In 1932, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Girthon Parish Church joined with the former United Free Church congregation of Girthon Rutherford. After the union the charge remained under the name of Girthon and the former Rutherford church was converted for use as the church hall. A further union later followed in 1975 with Anwoth, to form the charge of Anwoth and Girthon, and the united session established a link in 1990 with Borgue. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
