The church of Brechin Gardner Memorial was erected in memory of Alexander Gardner, minister of the second charge of Brechin Parish Church, 1843-1893, and was dedicated in 1898. The parish of Gardner Memorial was endowed out of Mr Gardner's estate of Esbie, Dumfriesshire and was disjoined by the Court of Teinds in 1899 and erected quoad sacra. In 1937 Gardner Memorial united with the congregation of Brechin East, initially under the title of Brechin Gardner Memorial and East, however in 1950 East was dropped from the name. Further union followed in 1974 with Brechin West and St Columba's, under the name of Brechin Gardner Memorial West and St Columba's, the charge was later renamed Brechin Southesk in 1975 however the title of Brechin Gardner Memorial was once more re-instated in 1997. The Kirk Session of Brechin Gardner Memorial sat within the Presbytery of Brechin and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
