In the early 18th century, during the ministry of William Clugston, the parish church of Forfar was experiencing overcrowding, and in order to alleviate this problem additional services commenced in an old Episcopal Chapel, which was purchased in 1835. This chapel later became the parish church of St James's when it was disjoined from Forfar and erected quoad sacra in 1872. In 1977 Forfar St James's united with the congregation of Forfar West (CH3/1530) to form Forfar St Margaret's. The Kirk Session of Forfar St James's sat within the Presbytery of Forfar until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of Angus and Mearns. |
