In 1695 the old parish church of Ardrossan was blown down during a storm, and as a consequence was re-erected on a less exposed site in 1697. In 1744 however this new location was exchanged for one within the expanding town of Saltcoats and the Parish Church of Ardrossan was once again re-erected at this new location. Several years later in 1773 the new Saltcoats building almost suffered the same fate as the old church and was so badly damaged during severe gales that it had to be rebuilt in the following year. After a time, the new church in Saltcoats was considered to be less commodious than required and in addition the need for a permanent church in Ardrossan had become apparent. Accordingly, work started in April 1844 on a new parish church within Ardrossan and the new building, which was opened in the same year, was termed New Ardrossan Parish Church. The old parish church of Ardrossan ceased to be used as a place of worship in 1908 and a new church was erected, which became Saltcoats St Cuthbert's. In 1964 Saltcoats St Cuthbert's Parish church united with the former United Free church congregation of Saltcoats South Beach and the charge was termed Saltcoats St Cuthbert's South Beach until 1997 when the name South Beach was dropped . The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Ardrossan. |
