The church of Marnoch, which was known of old as Aberchirder, was dedicated to St Marnan who is said to have founded the original church and used it as a base for his missionary work during the 7th century. For a time prior to the reformation, the church belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath and ministry is recorded from 1567, in the person of John Wilson. In 1953, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Marnoch old parish church joined with the congregation of Marnoch New, under the name of the New Church of Marnoch. After the union both churches continued in use until 1990, when the last regular service took place in the old parish church, which dates back to 1792. The Kirk Session of Marnoch sat within the Presbytery of Turriff until around 1630 when it was removed from Turriff and added to the Presbytery of Strathbogie, where it remained until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Strathbogie and the Presbytery of Fordyce were united under the name of the Presbytery of Strathbogie and Fordyce. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, Marnoch became part of the Presbytery of Buchan. |
