The church of Savoch (also known as Savoch of Deer ) was opened in 1834, largely due to the efforts of the Rev James Mair, schoolmaster of Savoch, and a number of years thereafter in 1851 the parish of Savoch was disjoined from Deer, New Deer, Ellon and Tarves and erected as a separate parish, quoad sacra. Following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Savoch parish church was named Savoch East and in 1933 Savoch East was joined with the former United Free Church congregation of Savoch West, under the name of Savoch. After the local union the former West church was closed and later sold in 1953. In 1975 Savoch established a link with Maud and in 1996 the two linked charges were united to form the session of Maud and Savoch. Savoch church was later closed in 1997 and Savoch and Maud linked with New Deer St Kane's in 1999. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Deer until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Buchan. |
