Gillespie Central Church, Glasgow, was formed by the union in 1950 of Central and Gillespie churches. The latter had originated in a schism within Calton Relief congregation in 1844. The minority formed what was to be successively Gillespie Relief, United Secession, United Presbyterian and United Free Church. Their church building, in London Road at Bain Street, dated from 1845. Gillespie Central, which worshipped in the former Central property in Charlotte Street, lasted only until 1953, when it united with St Andrew?s. As Church of Scotland charges, both were in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Clydesdale. |
