St Andrew?s Church, Glasgow, originated with a thatched building in New Wynd, built by a privileged group of Presbyterians in 1687. In 1691 it was declared to be one of the city churches, but was very inadequate for the purpose. The present classical building in St Andrew?s Square was built between 1739 and 1756. St Andrew?s united with St James? Glasgow Cross in 1939, with Gillespie Central in 1953, and others. It was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). |
